Friday Movie Night: Surf's Up!

Starting this Friday Nov. 20, Paradise will host one movie night per month, free and open to the public. This Friday, we'll kick off with Surf's Up, a kid-friendly animated movie (also very funny for adults) about up-and-coming penguin surfer Cody Maverick's and his first pro competition experience on Pen Gu Island.

Set in a documentary-surf style with penguin appearances by the likes of Kelly Slater and Rob Machado, this movie is fun for the whole family.

When: Friday, Nov. 20 at 7pm
Where: Paradise Surf Shop
Tea and beverages will be provided.
Bring a pillow and blanket!

Yoga Fridays

For the next few weeks, Paradise Surf Shop will be transformed into a bright and comfortable yoga studio every Friday morning from 8:30-10am. We want to give back to the community this winter season, not only through our customer service but also by starting up a monthly raffle and weekly events and classes to bring people together and nourish the soul.

Meet your Instructor: Marion Clark

Marion comes to Santa Cruz from Hermosa Beach where she spent 10 years as a student and teacher of yoga and pilates. She teaches vinyasa flow that incorporates core pilates strength as well as a connection to the breath or "prana" in each pose.

All you need to bring is your yoga mat and positive energy. The class is by donation so every one is welcome to attend.

The schedule of classes is subject to change as we approach the holidays and the start of the new year. We will inform you once next year's schedule is set.

Hope to see you all this Friday!

Namaste,
The women of Paradise

Dear & Yonder Screening at Paradise

Attention all water women: the highly anticipated all-female surf movie Dear & Yonder will hit the big screen at Paradise Surf Shop on Dec. 5 at 6pm.

Directed and produced by Tiffany Campbell and Andria Lessler, Dear & Yonder chronicles the lives and surfing adventures of a dynamic cast of women wave riders, from top professionals like Stephanie Gilmore and Sofia Mulanovich to Santa Cruz’ own surfer-shaper Ashley Lloyd. While all these women come from diverse backgrounds, they are united by adventurous spirits and a deep connection with the ocean. The film goes beyond your average surf movie by cultivating a sense of place, rooting the scenes in the rich history of female surfing and by encouraging environmental sustainability both in the water and on land.

“I wanted the film to have more of a documentary-style story telling aspect,” says Campbell, “ so I looked for women who had interesting lives outside of surfing who were also exceptional water women.”

Campbell and Lessler spent three years traveling and shooting the film in the green liquid caves of Indonesia, at the perfect point breaks of mainland Mexico and out to sea with Captain Liz Clark, who relied solely on wind power and her own wits to sail the world in search of epic waves and a greater connection to the earth.

The opening reception will begin at 6pm followed by live music provided by San Jose’s The Mumlers. The film will premiere around 8pm with an intro by Campbell and a Question and Answer segment after the screening. Tickets are $10 to help with remaining production costs. Buy them in advance at Paradise Surf Shop or on the night of the event.

Come experience the depth and beauty of Dear & Yonder as it moves you to bring positivity back into your communities and home breaks.

“Dear and Yonder is our way to give something back to the thing we love,” Campbell says.

Surf & Siesta Day

Two weeks ago, we started a new tradition at paradise: surf & siesta day! You know the best part about it? It's a weekly event. So if you're wondering why we close up shop every Wednesday during our slow season, it's because we're giving ourselves a day to escape and surf, do some yoga on the beach and maybe even take a nap. We're in it for the love of the sport after all, not the money.

In a society of long retail hours, we're taking inspiration from cultures that move at a slower pace. These countries close up shop in the afternoon and head home to be with family or rest. Wednesday is our afternoon siesta; its time for reminding ourselves why we're here. Nothing does that better than a midweek surf trip with friends.

So you won't find us in the shop on Wednesdays. You'll have to look for us in the water or come by and visit us any another day between 10am and 6pm.

Meet Jeremiah Kille and Conspiracy Surfboards

You may have seen his artwork scattered around Santa Cruz, gracing the walls of Verve or the window next to the Rio Theater, but have you seen his surfboards?

"He" is Jeremiah Kille and he shapes under the names Conspiracy and Current. The Tahoe native began surfing at age 14, and he's been shaping for the last nine years for companies like M10 and Stretch and now for himself. When Jeremiah's not surfing or shaping, he's working toward his B.F.A. at San Jose State or pushing the limits of his painting abilities. His creative flair is evident in his board designs, which are often decorated with iconic stencil images or streaked with color. Jeremiah also pushes the envelope in his shapes, experimenting with unconventional sizes and setups, like the 9'4 noserider pictured below:

9'4 Current Noserider. Sorry guys, this one just sold!

Paradise is honored to be one of the only shops to carry Jeremiah's boards. Our current Conspiracy quiver includes:
  • 5'6" x 2 3/8 x 19 1/2 swallow tail
  • 5'6" x 2 1/2 x 19 1/2 swallow tail
  • 5'8" x 2 1/16 x 17 7/8 thruster
  • 5'11" x 2 3/8 x 19 1/4 swallow tail
  • 6'2" x 2 3/8 x 18 1/2 thruster
If you want to keep tabs on Jeremiah, his newest board designs and art shows around the Bay Area, check out his blog.

Patagonia comes to Paradise!

Paradise just received its first shipment of Patagonia wetsuits! For all you guys out there, look no further than Paradise Surf Shop for the timeless retro back-zip vest to surf in style for the rest of the summer, or gear up for winter with the R3 front-zip full suit.

Patagonia wetsuits are made with high-quality Japanese neoprene, which adds dead air space to keep you warmer. The R3 is also lined with a blend of merino wool and recycled polyester to keep you surfing comfortably in water 48-55 degrees. And Patagonia suits are much more eco friendly than your average wetsuit, using chlorine-free wool and PVC-free kneepads in addition to the recycled polyester in the chest panel. These suits combine warmth and quality with environmental stewardship, helping conscious surfers continue to play their role in protecting the planet.

Dear & Yonder Film Premiere in Santa Cruz

The summer event we've been waiting for is finally here. The Dear & Yonder tour has reached Santa Cruz! For all of us at Paradise, Friday couldn't come soon enough. We can't wait to see the inspirational stories of surfer and water women, told through the artistic vision of Tiffany Morgan Campbell and Andria Lessler.

The premiere will take place up Hwy 1 a bit at Pie Ranch in Pescadero. There will be a benefit dinner beforehand with organic food courtesy of Blue House Route 1, Swanton Berry Farm and Sea Level Farms. Tickets are available here.

If you wanna come just for the film, tickets are $5 bucks at the door. There will be live bluegrass and an art auction. And, as if all that wasn't good enough, the film will be screened outdoors on the side of the barn! Bring chairs or blankets and warm clothes.

Hope to see you there!

Neal Casal & Carey Ott

On July 31st Paradise hosted a lil' private-party concert with some not so little names. Neal Casal and Carey Ott are both exceptional singer songwriters and somehow we managed to get 'em both here in Santa Cruz on the same night. Neal Casal was formerly in the Cardinals with Ryan Adams. Carey Ott hails from Tennessee and has had songs featured on shows such as Grey's Anatomy. Not only are they very talented musicians but they're also just downright rad folks.
So how did we get them here?! It was all the doing of a good friend(thank you Adam). The shop was transformed into an intimate little venue, and our new stage was christened by an amazing act. Only problem now is the bar is set very high for future shows. But there will definitely be more to come, so sign up for our email list to get the scoop on upcoming events. (Rumor has it we may be able to get Neal and Carey back for an encore show!)
In the meantime check out their sites:

Press for Paradise

Two magazines in one week.

Paradise Surf Shop is featured in the June issue of Lucky Magazine which hit newsstands May 12. We're featured alongside notable surf shops across the states & honored to have made the cut!

As if we weren't stoked enough on that, this week's People magazine featured a Toes on the Nose bikini we have for sale on our online store.

But you know the best part of this week? Yup you guessed it.... the awesome weather and the clean (albeit small) south swell we've had, perfect for logging-- go get some(& a copy of People and Lucky;-)

Floors!

To go along with the new website, we're getting new floors... well, old concrete ones actually. We've been busy tearing out old carpet & wood & spreading eco-friendly soy based gel-- affectionately renamed 'hippie juice' -- to reveal concrete underneath & it's lookin pretty darn good.

Paradise Website Launch!

Today Paradise launches it's brand new website! Aside from what you'd expect from a website, we now have an online store, so now you can get Paradise gear weather you're on Water Street or in Waterloo.

In case you haven't seen it yet, take a peek over at:

Best Paradise Moments of 2009, Happy New Year and a Late Toast to 2010

Every day at Paradise Surf Shop, we're reminded of how far we've come in the past year. Locals and out-of-towners alike often remark, "wow, the place looks great!" or "a lot has changed since the last time I was here.” It’s true — a lot has changed. To think that last January Paradise didn’t even have our website and now we’re blogging, tweeting, facebooking and
running a completely remodeled store is pretty astounding! So even though we're a little late for that midnight toast, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on 2009 and share our intentions for a healthy and stoked new year.

A New Look and Feel for Paradise! One of the greatest milestones of 2009 was our new space! Literally, we have new floors, a redwood-panelled wall and stage, new paint and a completely new rustic-vintage-living-room feel like that of your most tasteful relative (at least that's our hope). We just want to send a huge thank you to all the people involved in transforming the shop into a really inviting space. And if you haven't stopped by in a while, I think it's about time! You won't be disappointed.

Browse the shop, read a magazine or just hang out in this beautiful space!

Event Recap...To christen the new shop, Paradise was the proud host of several awesome events in 2009 from movie screenings to full-blown concerts. On July 31, Neal Casal (formerly a member of the Cardinals with Ryan Adams) headlined a show with opening performances by Ashley Lloyd and Cary Ott. This event was the first of its kind in the new Paradise space and it certainly revealed the shop's incredible music-venue potential. More recently, Paradise held a screening of Dear and Yonder and hosted a book signing with Nava Young -- all the kind of events we hope to bring into the new year!

Neil Casal performs on a spanking new, wood-paneled stage.

We heart Women on Waves. Paradise also co-sponsored the 12th Annual Women on Waves (W.O.W.) Surf Festival that came to Capitola last October! Being a female-focused surf shop, Women on Waves is an annual event dear to our hearts, which we've been involved in since its inception. While this year's festival may have had smaller waves, it had no less energy than usual and we all had a really great time surfing and cheering on our local ladies!

Nell Newman glides along a little peeler at WOW 2009. Photo Courtesy of Nikki Brooks.

Yoga Saturdays! This winter, Paradise started up a weekly yoga class with instructor Marion Clark, a surfer yogi who hails to Santa Cruz from Hermosa Beach. Starting Jan 23, classes will be held every Saturday morning from 8:30-10am before the shop opens. Start the new year off with the meditative, strengthening power of yoga held in your favorite local surf shop!

Here's to 2010... I know it's late to be announcing new year's resolutions but it's never too late to sit down, evaluate life and set goals for the future, right? I am incredibly proud of every thing we've accomplished at Paradise this past year, but there's no stopping now; we've got to keep pushing forward with our mission to serve the female and local surf communities and provide high-quality, environmentally and socially-conscious gear in a friendly and accessible way. This mission includes continuing to support our local shapers and retail vendors, planning even more community events and the resolution to do our part to get more women out in the water. Weekend surf clinics any one? How about a summer surf expedition? Let us know how we can serve you better.

Finally, none of the achievements of the past year would be possible without the support of our local community and loyal customers who inspire us forward with each friendly greeting and goofy smile that flashes when they find that perfect board. We can't thank you enough for being the life of this shop. With that, I'd like to wish you all a safe, healthy and happy new year from our living room to yours.
